Overview
Grand Moff Tarkin orders the Death Star to destroy Alderaan as a demonstration of power.
Tarkin chose Alderaan — Leia's homeworld and a known Rebel sympathizer — as the Death Star's first full demonstration. The planet and two billion lives were erased. Leia watched from the battle station; the act hardened the Rebellion (A New Hope, 0 BBY).
