Scarif is a tropical paradise turned fortress: turquoise shallows and palm atolls ringed by an orbital shield gate, chosen by the Empire to host the Imperial Security Complex - the vault of its most classified military schematics, and a hub of Death Star construction logistics.

In 0 BBY, Rogue One - Jyn Erso, Cassian Andor, K-2SO and a borrowed Alliance fleet - assaulted Scarif to steal the Death Star plans. Every member of the ground team died; the plans escaped through the shield gate to the Profundity and then the Tantive IV. Grand Moff Tarkin fired the Death Star on his own facility to contain the breach, vaporizing the Citadel and the beaches with it.
