Kessel hangs at the edge of the Maw black-hole cluster, wrapped in the Akkadese Maelstrom - a churning shroud of gas and carbonbergs that makes every approach a navigational gamble and gave the Kessel Run its name. The planet itself is split: a green northern hemisphere of royal estates, and the southern mines where glitterstim spice webs are torn from lightless tunnels by slave labor.

Under the Pyke Syndicate's wartime control the mines consumed Wookiee and droid alike, until a young Han Solo's crew sparked a slave revolt during the Dryden Vos coaxium heist - then ran the Kessel Run in 'twelve parsecs' (rounding down) by cutting through the Maw itself.
