Hoth

Sixth world of a remote blue-white star, Hoth is an ice ball scoured by nightly temperatures that kill unprotected travelers - and even tauntauns - within hours. Its only large native lifeforms are the predatory wampa and the tauntaun, both insulated against cold that freezes standard lubricants solid.

The Rebel Alliance chose precisely this hostility for Echo Base after Yavin. In 3 ABY an Imperial probe droid found the generators, and Darth Vader's Death Squadron executed the assault remembered as the Battle of Hoth: AT-AT walkers against snowspeeders, the first ground defeat the Rebellion could not spin. The base's evacuation through Imperial blockade scattered Alliance high command across the galaxy.
