⬢ CURATED RECORDBespin is a gas giant whose atmosphere contains a narrow habitable band - the Life Zone - of breathable air and standard temperature, threaded by beldons, vast gasbag creatures that excrete the precious tibanna gas used in blaster and hyperdrive technology. Cloud City, a tibanna mining colony of 5.5 million on a repulsor column, floats in this band, far enough from Imperial attention to stay independent... usually.
Under Baron Administrator Lando Calrissian the city tried to stay neutral; Darth Vader arrived first and turned it into a trap for Han Solo and Leia Organa. Its carbon-freezing chamber encased Solo for delivery to Jabba, and above its central air shaft Vader told Luke Skywalker the truth that broke him. Lando's evacuation order ended the city's neutrality and sent its administrator to the Rebellion.
